But perhaps not getting back to us on Saturday … July is forth.

Oh, they’re all just . . . days.

David J. Sharp's avatar

Ah, but some are more dayful

I was well into adulthood when I learned, after considerable confusion, that a British "marquee" is not an American "marquee."

Benjamin Dreyer's avatar

Oh, that’s a good one!

As I can’t recall ever having been confused here, I can only assume that I must have encountered the British one fairly early on.

Me, to self: They schlepped that big theater fixture into the backyard? Huh.

"Marquee names" were long a puzzle to me, as a Brit. Why did Americans put the names of famous actors and sportsfolk on temporary tents in parks and gardens?

So interesting. ❤️

Thank you, Laurie!

I’m completely winging this (as you can probably tell), so we’ll see how it evolves!

It does not feel like you are winging it .

I am all in .

It doesn't seem to me like you are "winging" it; it seems to me like you are copyediting the story (with notes for the class), but not just off the top of your head.

Good, I’m pleased.

Thank you!

Ooh. A semicolon flanked by footnote numbers! I imagine that was as pleasing to construct as it is to see.

I look forward to reading The Garden Party. Did anyone else read The Scarlett Ibis by James Hurst? That's the one that wrecked me; gives me chills to this day.

More, please. (And always accompanied by a photograph of Sallie if possible. My dogs don't mind if I admire other dogs.)

I have been traveling and am late to the party (!), but this is a joy to read. Very instructive indeed. Please do more of these, and ask Substack if they can provide readers a way to Like footnotes.
