Yes, I am getting a 'Room with a View' vibe here as well. I love having fun with pronouns. I am learning about Laura and 'that'. I agree about Mummy. Yes, Ms. Mansfield is all of her characters as well.

A gentle, almost inaudible vote for leaving "that" out (n. 11). Better grammar to be sure, but the rush of Laura's sensations would be slightly interrupted by the harshish sound and the sensuous "moan" that governs the whole phrase thus ever so slightly muted. But a judgement call. I generally come down on the side of "that" unless euphony overrules and sense survives.
